These children were getting in the groove to celebrate a Royal wedding.

Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were to be married at St Paul’s Cathedral in July 1981, 40 years ago this week.

So what better way to mark the occasion than to record a song entitled Married Today.

Pupils at St Andrew’s Church of England First School at Headington are pictured a few weeks before the big day rehearsing for the recording.

Thirty of them had been chosen to sing with piano and synthesiser accompaniment by professional musicians.

Five hundred records of their song, composed anonymously by an Oxford woman, were to be produced and put on sale.

Recording boss John Watman heard about the pupils’ outstanding singing through his local music contacts.

He agreed to cut a disc after seeing the children in action and invited them to his recording studio at Watlington.

Mr Watman was full of praise for their efforts, saying: “At the moment, there are between 70 and 100 recordings about the wedding.

“I have heard quite a few, but none has been done by children. Their singing is very good.”

The flip side of the record was a disco version of Mendelssohn’s Wedding March.
