AN Oxford street was closed for a short period of time so that firefighters could free birds trapped in netting at a church.

The rescue mission took place yesterday morning by crews at Rewley Road Fire Station in New Inn Hall Street at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church.

The team assisted the RSPCA following calls from members of the public about birds trapped in netting in the city area.

Crews used an aerial appliance to release the birds and limit the suffering of the birds that could not escape.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said on Facebook: "We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused."
