Oxford Mail readers have been sharing their views on how best to tackle racism in football.

They spoke out after some players in the England team received abuse on social media following the Euro 2020 final defeat against Italy on Sunday following a penalty shoot-out.

It was 1-1 after extra time and England lost on penalties with Marcus Rashford one of players to miss.

The Oxford Mail asked on Facebook ‘What do you think can be done to tackle racism at football matches?’

EMMA POLIN: “Education.”

MO BEHRADMEHR: “Give £1m fines to all the companies that have platforms and put it out there for one racist comments also two years’ jail for the first time offenders and name and shame them.”

PAT CROSS: “You will never stop racists - it goes back to ignorant grand parents and parents.”

RAY PRICE: “It will never stop, more’s the pity - it’s a built-in safety mechanism for all kinds of life, since the year dot. I’m just glad that I am colour blind.”

COLIN MORRIS-SMITH: “Why did England not get an open top parade?”

CHRIS SYMONDS: “Ban the stupid game.”

PAUL GODDARD: “By stopping it everywhere!”

KAREN WHITE: “Anyone caught being racist should be banned from all matches indefinitely.”

BERNIE KELLY: “And social media.”

STEVE HILL: “After a public warning over the PA system, stop the match. Empty the stadium. No result.

“Call it a draw whatever the score line - just like when you can’t finish a cricket match because of the weather.”

HELEN ROBINSON: “Name and shame. Not just racists but anyone causing a problem. Overweight, thin, ginger hair, bald, short, tall….. they get abused too.”

ALICE STYLES: “It’s not all racist - they have banter to annoy everyone”

MATT CARTER: “You can’t banter about people’s skin colour or ethnicity though.”

STEVE WEST: “Unfortunately you can. One of the pitfalls of social media. It was always going to lead to these racists posting rubbish. The same for these poor kids getting bullied online.”

MATT CARTER: “Unless you specifically know the person and they are happy for it then no you really can’t.

“There seems to be lots of people that think they can have ‘banter’ with someone they hardly know.

“Social media makes everything 10 times worse as you have lots of idiots who think they can poke fun or abuse others as they know they are safe.

STEVE WEST: “This is why I said unfortunately you can. Extremists and racists will always use it because its the only way they can get a reaction.”

LEE NESBITT: “I have never heard any racism in over 20 years going to football,

"There is a very very small minority who are racist and this is blown out of all proportion.”

DAVID THOMPSON: “Not have football matches.”

CHRISSY DEBANKS: “You can’t ever stop it - rasism is built in them, it’s everywhere.”

TONY BROWN: “Stop doing the knee - it would stop the booing.”

CHRISTOPHER LAYMON: “I listened on radio. I did not even know who it was that choked and missed a virtually empty net.”

OLLY HUTSON: “Don’t encourage mainstream media to trawl the web for the most offensive content and then thrust it into the front page of every newspaper. Without this, the bigots would only be spouting crap to their limited circle of like minded racists. However, instead the entire nation is offended and upset by content they would most likely have not seen otherwise.”

HELEN ELIZABETH: “The cameras should zoom in on these people and publicly post them we would soon get names, people would get sacked and then people will realise there is no hiding place.”

DAVID SMITH: “Play all games behind closed doors.”

SARAH WILLIAMS: “For online make sure people provide ID to be able to have a social media account; make people accountable. Daily I can report catfishing accounts and even have them admit they are not the person in their profile but Facebook lets it happen. People need to be charged for it regardless of online or at stadiums - the CCTV system at Kassam can pinpoint a single person.”

JAMES SPARKS: “How about addressing the intolerance in society? It doesn’t change when you go through a turnstile, nor is it limited to skin colour.”
