A pilot who is taking her two donkeys, Wizard and Muffin, on a month-long 200-mile adventure from Didcot to North Wales is appealing for help after the group was forced to make a stop.

Polly Vacher MBE is at the halfway point and has had to rest in Eardiston in Worcestershire as Wizard has developed a sore.

Carolle Doyle, who is on the epic trip with Polly and her donkeys, said: “Wizard’s girth began to rub so we took the decision to stop and put on surgical spirit to to harden the skin. It was better to stop before we ran into trouble.

"We decided to take the two donkeys 23 miles by trailer missing out two overnight stops and are now in Eardiston until Monday as we always have Sunday off.

"Wizard's skin has toughened up and he is now fit to go but I have to say the humans are very glad of a break. We’re having a few days of rest and recreation, animals and humans, and will be clip-clopping along again on Monday.”

However, Mrs Doyle is now appealing to people at home to help make up the lost time.

She said: “We’ve got 23 miles to make up so I had the idea that we could get anyone who drives or rides a pony, or horse or donkey to drive or ride a mile and let us know about it.

“In that way they can be part of the Donkathon and we will have lots of lovely stories.”

Mrs Vacher, 77, is a record-breaking pilot who has flown solo around the world twice.

She was inspired to do the 'Donkathon' to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis Society after her nephew Alexei was diagnosed with MS at just 26.

Wizard and Muffin set off on June 25 from North Moreton and travel eight miles a day.

Early in July they visited Brize Norton’s pre-school nursery before setting off up the Windrush valley.
