A man has been bailed by police after being arrested for hacking off the arm of the King Alfred statue in Wantage.

A 24-year-old man handed himself to police officers yesterday morning and was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

He has been bailed until February 23.

Vandals chopped off part of the right arm and distinctive battle axe of iconic King Alfred statue on Monday.

The section of arm that was cut off was left shattered in pieces at the base of the statue. The statue has stood in the town's Market Square for 130 years.
