A police officer who shot a call centre worker at a firearms awareness course will not be face charges from the Crown Prosecution Service.

Keith Tilbury, 50, was shot in the chest with a Magnum pistol in a classroom by Pc David Micklethwaite at a police training centre in Kidlington in May last year.

Mr Tilbury was among 11 police call centre workers taking part in the firearms training course at what is known as Police Headquarters North at Oxford Spires Business Park.

He was taken to hospital after being shot once in the chest.

Today the Crown Prosecution Service said it would not be prosecuting anyone for the shooting.

The incident had been investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The commission passed its findings to the CPS in October to consider whether any criminal charges should be brought.

The IPCC has now written to Thames Valley Police to ask for their proposals, if any, on disciplinary action.

The Heath and Safety Executive is continuing a separate inquiry into possible contraventions of health and safety at work legislation.

Following the shooting Pc Micklethwaite was redeployed to non-firearms duty.

A spokesman for Thames Valley police said it would not be commenting on the decision.
