WE reported last week that a number of banks have closed their Oxfordshire branches this year, never to reopen.

Lloyds Banking Group last week announced the closure of 44 Lloyds and Halifax branches in England and Wales, one of which is located on Reading Road in Henley.

The latest restructuring plans come in response to a shift in customer behaviour, but Lloyds is not the only lender to be shutting branches across the country and in Oxfordshire.

HSBC closed its Headington branch on London Road earlier this month, and the bank shut its Summertown branch on Banbury Road at the end of May.

May also saw the closure of the Burford branch of TSB bank on Sheep Street.

In August, customers will also see the Headington offices of Santander closing its doors due to 'fallen usage'.

READ AGAIN: All the bank branches being axed in Oxfordshire this year

Here is what our readers said on Facebook and on the Oxford Mail website about the problem.

TINA MATTHEWS: "Makes you laugh after they revamped the Headington branch which cost millions….. then they close it! Typical waste of money!"

GERRY REILLY: "Cashless society coming in to play."

ROBERT DANIEL CRIPPS: "Look at Carterton they don’t even have banks no more. And I feel sorry for the older people who don’t use the Internet or have access to a Smartphone or online banking."

ROBIN FORDE: "Luckily Buckingham isn’t too far away if you can get out of Oxfordshire then maybe you won’t have travel too far to find a bank such as the one pictured above."

KEVIN KEITH ROBINSON: "At this rate we'll have no High Street banks it will be all on line and cash machines."

MICHELLE TOWNSEND: "Cash is still about so won't be closing all. My husband customers give cash is need to bank that. How silly. We will be living in world soon no cash."

GEORGIE AGDGDGWNGO III: "I already have to travel to Abingdon or Didcot from Wantage to get to a Lloyds branch. Where next, Oxford? Aberdeen? To be fair, I rarely use a branch, but very occasionally pay in cash. Many pensioners will sadly miss visiting their local bank and chatting to the staff."

RJOXFORD: "Those unhappy with bank branch closures could always switch to Nationwide Building Society, who have pledged to keep all their branches for at least two years."

LENTY: "Don't panic, I'm sure a real person will be available to chase any outstanding debt you owe them."

ROCKETMAN: "It's a shoddy and disrespectful way to treat long standing customers. Talking to a vacuous website does not cut. This does not save customers time. You can hang on for ages trying to get through. It customers money, not theirs.

"They don't care, not Lloyds other banks as well. It reduces the footfall in town centres. It is about trying to force a cashless society. This is NOT customer service and there are customers like the elderly being denied access to purely suit selfish banks."

MICHAEL WILLIAMS: "It's been years since I went into a Bank. Do most online and some through an agent like Post Office. Is there a case for a coordinated response from all Banks to use local Post Offices?"

KATHRYN WHITBY: "Maybe it time for all banks to move into a 'shared branch'?

"Barclays Monday, Lloyds Tuesday, Etc."

BREXITBABE: "I visit my bank branch in Oxford about 4 times a year. It's a sign of the times. People do online banking largely so don't need to go to their bank branch. I've just had a big upgrade on my current account all without visiting my Oxford City branch.

"All online on my bank account. Although I do admit I wouldn't like to lose it but just don't have the need to visit routinely at all.

"I just pop in if I'm shopping in Oxford or want to pay in some cash or a cheque to the ATM so I don't have to queue."

MATDUCK: "Leaving the door open for supermarkets to open in store banking."
