A DRUG dealer who crashed into a heavily-pregnant driver while going the wrong-way round a roundabout said he deserved to go prison.

George Baker, 21, was fleeing from the police when he crashed into the woman’s car at the Rowstock roundabout between Wantage and Harwell last March.

Oxford Crown Court heard that the Drayton man, who seven months later would be caught with a drug dealer line phone, had been taking the 2006-plate BMW from Reading to the Didcot area on behalf of the gangsters for whom he worked.

His barrister, Kellie Enever, told Recorder John Ryder QC: “What Mr Baker says is he deserves to go to prison because of the lady and her being pregnant.”

Jailing Baker for four years, the judge said: “The history of your life to date makes extremely depressing reading.

“You are only 21 years old. It is up to you whether you listen to anything I say or whether you don’t. Your entire future is in your hands and it’s going to go one of two ways. Such experience that I have tells me that.

“When you are released from the sentence I must impose you will either have reflected on your past life, on your conduct and how so easily you could have caused devastating damage to a pregnant woman and her child.

“You personally have observed that drugs ruin people’s lives. Believe me, they do.

“So, either you will have reflected on these matters and for example [how] it could have been your mother driving the car with which you collided, and you will determine to live a more responsible life, which will mean you having a much more fulfilling and enjoyable life.

“Or you will offend again and become a career criminal and that is a life which involves no glamour at all.”

Ms Enever, mitigating, said Baker was remorseful and hoped to use his time in custody to get himself clean of drugs. He recognised the devastating impact drugs they had.

The court heard that Baker was behind the wheel of a BMW that overtook queuing traffic on March 17 last year. The ‘aggressive’ manoeuvre was spotted by a police officer on his way to another emergency call.

The officer ran the BMW’s plates and followed the vehicle, indicating he wanted the driver to stop. The car sped off, at one stage hitting 90mph in a 50 zone. The police officer, who was not pursuit trained, called off the chase.

Baker went the wrong-way around the Rowstock roundabout and struck another car head-on. The eight month pregnant driver and her unborn child were checked over at hospital but did not suffer serious injuries. The BMW driver and his passenger fled from the scene but were caught from DNA left on the car’s airbags.

Seven months later, police on patrol in Drayton last October searched Baker after smelling cannabis. They found a small amount of the class B drug on him together with a ‘burner’ phone and £400 cash.

When the phone was later analysed, it pointed to Baker being involved in supplying heroin and crack cocaine.

Baker, of Drayton, near Abingdon, pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of class A drugs, dangerous driving and possession of cannabis. He was banned from driving for two years and must pass an extended retest.
