The wife of a Good Samaritan left deaf in one ear after he was hit over the head with a bottle has pleaded for the public to finally name his attacker.

More than six weeks after the assault in Didcot, police have run up against a wall of silence.

Father-of-two John Laing, 35, was walking home from the pub when he saw a gang smash a bottle in the face of a teenager in Lostock Place, Ladygrove, outside the Co-op shop.

He went to help, but the next thing he can remember is coming round lying on the ground injured and unable to hear.

He suffered two skull fractures. Doctors have told him he will remain deaf in his left ear and must wear a hearing aid in his right.

Tracey Laing, 33, has urged anyone who knows her husband's attacker to come forward.

She said: "When I look at my husband, he's not the person I married.

"It upsets me so much that this man hasn't been caught.

"Surely someone must have known who did it?

"Please don't be scared to come forward.

"Let the police or Crimestoppers know if you have any information. You don't have to give your name.

"It's so frustrating. I just wish there was something I could do to get them to come forward."

The appeal for information comes two weeks after an anonymous reader sent £100 to the family via The Oxford Times.

A note accompanying the money said: "It is wrong that someone who does the right thing should suffer, especially at this time of year."

Mrs Laing said: "We're extremely grateful for the money.

"It is just a shame we do not know who it is, so we can thank them personally.

"Hopefully, they will read this and know that we really do appreciate their kind- ness."

The family has received a number of donations from the public since the attack, which they say will go towards their mortgage, with any left over going towards a holiday.

She said: "I think we all deserve one after what we've been through."

Mr Laing, a lorry driver, has not been able to work since the attack and will find out in the next few weeks if he can return to his job.

Mrs Laing has also been signed off from her work at a local school by doctors, although she said her children, Jack, 10, and Ellie, six, had coped remarkably well.

Police said they believe Mr Laing was hit above the ear and behind the head with either a bottle or a brick.

A police spokesman said: "We are continuing with our investigations and if anyone has any information we want to hear from them as soon as possible."

Anyone with information on the attack should call Didcot police on 08458 505505 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
