The county's residents are being urged to stop their old Christmas trees going to landfill and send them for recycling.

In Oxford, the trees will be turned into wood chips and used in the city's parks and open spaces.

Jean Fooks, Oxford City Council executive member for a cleaner city, said: "I'd encourage residents to recycle their real Christmas tree as this is really good for the environment."

  • In Oxford, recycling points will be open from Saturday until a week on Sunday, and are at Alexandra Court, North Oxford; Atkyns Road, Wood Farm; Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre car park; Bury Knowle Park, Headington; Manzil Gardens, off Cowley Road; Cutteslowe Park; Florence Park, Cowley; Hinksey park; Long Lane, Littlemore; Meadow Lane recreation ground; Oatlands recreation ground; Quarry recreation ground; Redbridge waste recycling centre; South Park, Morrell Avenue; Sunnymead recreation ground; Westlands Drive, Northway, and Green Road, Risinghurst.
  • In the Vale of the White Horse, residents will be able to have their tree recycled with their regular garden waste and cardboard collection. Householders are asked to cut the tree and fit into their brown bin if possible, but if it is too large, to leave it by the side of the bin, and if possible cut into manageable lengths. Trees can also be taken to Millets Garden Centre, Frilford; Charlton Park Garden Centre, Wantage; Wyevale Garden Centre, off the A34 at Chilton, and at South Hinksey, until Monday. Stanford in the Vale and Drayton recycling centres will also be accepting trees for recycling.
  • In Cherwell, trees should be left beside or in the brown recycling bin.
  • In South Oxfordshire, trees can be put in brown recycling bins and, in some cases, can also be returned to where they were bought on this and the following weekend. The places they can be returned to are Notcutts Garden centre, Nuneham Courtney; Waterperry Gardens, Waterperry; Wyevale Garden Centre, Harpsden; Route One Garden Centre, Brightwell; Toad Hall Garden and Machinery Centre, Henley; The Herb Farm, Sonning Common, and The Tree Barn, Christmas Common.
  • Free chipping services will also be offered from a number of locations in West Oxfordshire. These will be at New Street car park, Chipping Norton; Back Lane car park, Eynsham; Welch Way car park, Witney, and Hensington Road car park, Woodstock, on Saturday. On Sunday, the chipping centres will be Black Bourton Road car park, Carterton; Spendlove Centre, Charlbury; and Welch Way car park, Witney.
