OXFORD's Lord Mayor will watch a game of Aunt Sally between the city's Sheriff and the Freemen as part of his civic engagements in the next month.

The Lord Mayor, Mark Lygo, has seven civic engagements between today and the start of July.

On Friday (June 18) he will take part in an alternative walking tour of Oxford alongside Asylum Welcome.

On Sunday, June 20, Mr Lygo will join a community meal at Damascus Rose Kitchen at Flo's Cafe, Florence Park.

And on Monday, June 21, he will take part in the flag raising ceremony for Armed Forces Day at Oxford Castle.

The annual inspection of Port Meadow will take place on Friday, June 25, followed by the Sheriff's game of Aunt Sally against the Freemen of Oxford and the Commoner's of Wolvercote.

A blue plaque will then be unveiled commemorating Abel Beesley on Saturday, June 26.

Then, on July 1, the Lord Mayor will join the judging panel for the Oxford Open Exhibition, held at the Jam Factory on Hollybush Row.

The Mayor of Oxford is a long-held position stretching back to the medieval period.

In 1962, the Queen granted the 'dignity' of Lord Mayor to the city, and the ceremonial position has been named this ever since.

The position is usually held by the longest serving city councillor in Oxford who has not held it previously.

They Lord Mayor also chairs council meetings.
