Sir - Referring to Wing Commander A.J. Wright's letter entitled Recognising Efforts (December 21), my husband and I support everything he writes regarding lack of recognition of the enormous work and sacrifice made by Bomber Command members during the Second World War.

For over ten years, throughout the 1980s and 1990s, we were the honorary secretaries to the charity, Bomber Airfield Society, whose aim was to acquire an ex-bomber airfield in the UK in order to set up a living museum as a memorial to Bomber Command. Several airfields were identified and outline plans drawn up with the support of many Second World War veterans and notable support from Dame Vera Lynn, Dame Thora Hird, the late Air Marshall Sir Ivor Bloom, the late Group Captain Hamish Mahaddie, the late Baroness Ryder to name but a few.

The society's difficulty proved to be the Ministry of Defence. In order to proceed it was necessary to obtain their recognition of such an overwhelming national need and, on their part, to offer a financial discount on costs for the purchase of an airfield. Private financial backing had been assured. As a result, grants from supporting bodies had been applied for and sanctioned in principle.

Despite all efforts, endless discussion and meetings held over several years, the Ministry of Defence, although recognizing the need, would not sanction financial support. Such was the sad outcome of endeavours by so many.

With the passing of time and the deaths of so many notable veteran members, it was finally agreed to remove the whole project from the agenda.
