The UK has recorded a further eight Covid-related deaths and 7,490 new cases with 187 patients admitted to hospital, Public Health England confirmed.

The health body recently changed the way it records the figures.

Cases identified through a positive lateral flow test – those which can deliver results within half an hour – will no longer be counted if the person then takes a PCR test, which is sent to a lab to be checked, and receives a negative result within three days.

The latest data shows that the NHS reached an important milestone as more than 78.9 per cent of the population has received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, while 56.6 per cent of adults have received their second jab.
