HOUSEHOLDERS are being urged to protect themselves from bogus callers - by remaining extra vigilant.

Although the number of distraction burglaries in the Bicester police sector, is down, compared to the same period last year, police in the town are concerned that bogus callers are continuing to target properties in the area.

On December 17, a 76-year-old man had £60 stolen from his home in Windrush Close, Kings End.

The incident took place at about 7pm, when the caller arrived at the man's house - telling him he had won a doormat and a pair of slippers in a charity competition.

The stranger then distracted his victim and stole the cash from a coat pocket.

PC Sally Moore, of Thames Valley Police said: "The victim was left very shaken by this incident.

"I would warn people, especially the elderly, to be aware of bogus callers."

Since the start of 2007 there have been five distraction burglaries in the police sector, which stretches from Finmere to the Otmoor villages. This compares with 12 during the same period in 2006.

However, police are still receiving an increasing number of reports from householders who have turned away strangers from the doorstep because they are not satisfied with their stories.

Thames Valley Police crime reduction advisor David Campbell said: "I sympathise greatly with the Bicester man who was shocked and distressed by this latest incident.

"There has been a lot of local publicity about bogus callers and I have spoken to many vulnerable groups and individuals.

"I explain that these criminals may be smartly-dressed, wear an official-looking reflective jacket, or even appear to be in a uniform of some sort."

Anyone with any information on bogus callers is asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
