A primary school’s plans to transform part of their grounds into a mini-forest have been given a boost by housebuilders.

St Nicholas CE Primary School’s plans to turn a corner of its school fields into a Forest School Area have moved forward thanks to a £2,000 donation from the company.

The school in East Challow is one of the smallest of eight schools as a part of the Vale Academy Trust, six being in the Wantage area.

The school has 104 pupils and is growing as families move to new homes in the nearby Mactaggart & Mickel Childrey Park development.

The school opened a new nursery in September.

Heather Richards, headteacher at St Nicholas CE Primary, said: “We have already begun work on our school garden and the donation from Mactaggart & Mickel will enable us to expand our opportunities further.”

Roxy Boulter, from the Vale Academy Trust, said: “In line with the expected growth in local population this small village school has big ambitions.

“The school is ready to offer places to more children and would love to offer new outdoor facilities and equipment to complement the improvements already under way.

“This will bring a huge smile to the faces of the whole Challow community so we’re grateful for Mactaggart & Mickel’s generous support.

“Initiatives like forest school add another dimension to children’s learning that is invaluable and can help all children gain confidence and resilience.”
