ONCE again we are sickened to see animals injured in our city because of stupid, careless people.

Most of the world already agreed long ago that littering is unacceptable; in recent years events like David Attenborough's Blue Planet series have made it even moreso – what is it that is stopping some people from getting the message?

Litter is appalling for its own sake, because it is unsightly, but we also now know what plastic waste can cause insidious damage that we cannot see.

Broken glass, plastic bags and food wrappers, however, are all just obviously dangerous and potentially harmful, and there is no excuse.

So what on Earth is to be done?

The rangers who help look after Port Meadow already patrol it and pick up litter, and anyone caught dropping rubbish is liable to a fine, but these patrols are very few and far between.

Does our council need to start sending agents out to crack down on people having a good time every sunny day? Do we need to put CCTV cameras up? Or just close Port Meadow off entirely?

If these aren't the solutions then someone please tell us what is.
