A DRAMATIC car chase in a residential neighbourhood in Oxford saw four people arrested by police.

Loud sirens interrupted the normally quiet suburban setting of Cope Close in Botley .

Eyewitness Bob Cowley, who heard the commotion through a window at his home, revealed that a large van was brought to a stop by police after a chase.

The 65-year-old resident said that uniformed officers from three squad cars surrounded the vehicle and handcuffed its four occupants, who he described as 'male adults in various age groups'.

This is what Mr Cowley had to say about the incident, which took place at around 3.30pm on Friday: "I do not know where the chase started but when the van was surrounded, the people in there knew they could not do anything to escape.

"There was no altercation between them and the police.

"I was surprised but it was clear that there was not going to be anything else happening."

Mr Cowley said he did not want to speculate, but added that this looked like a 'significant' and 'coordinated operation.

He explained: "Not only there were three squad cars there, but more arrived and went later on while the men were being questioned.

"I had the impression that the officers were in touch with another unit somewhere else."

The resident added that they were each handcuffed and driven away in separate police vehicles.

It is still unclear what lead to the chase and why the four men were arrested.

Thames Valley Police has been contacted for a comment on the arrests.
