A NEW housing estate will aim to help those on the housing waiting list in Oxford.

The 91 new homes will be built on Railway Lane in Littlemore over the next two years.

The houses will be built on derelict brownfield land which was previously used as a depot for Dominion Oils.

Developer Cantay Estates, which is working with Oxford City Council Housing Ltd to build the estate, said that it wanted to help ease housing pressure.

The planning application for the new estate has now been submitted to the council.

The councils are currently building a further 1,123 new council homes.

Keys to some of those homes, in Kidlington, were handed to the council at the end of the month.

A total of 2,852 households are currently on the council’s housing waiting list.

The Railway Lane development will only contain 'affordable' homes: 45 will be available for social rent while 46 will be shared ownership.

Tony Nolan, director of Cantay Group, said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for us to collaborate with the council and their housing company, Oxford City Housing Ltd, to provide much-needed affordable housing.

“This site has been in our ownership for a considerable time and through collaborative arrangements with the council we will be able to deliver a programme of affordable housing delivery on land that has been unused and derelict since 2003.”

In Oxford, social rent is normally 40 per cent of equivalent private rents.

Shared ownership allows for residents to get a foot on the property ladder by buying a stake in their homes that they otherwise would not be able to afford.

The new estate’s properties, set to be ready by spring 2023, will range in size from one-bedroom flats to five-bedroom houses.

Cantay also said the new estate would be environmentally-friendly, using sustainable materials and integration of renewable technologies.

The new homes will be positioned close to a good bus service, the developer said, and it also pointed to plans to re-open the Cowley branch line to passenger services at some point in the future, which could potentially benefit new residents – if it happens.

The site plan has also allowed for the potential development of future railway access as Littlemore historically had its own railway station.

Currently, the only traffic near the estate is freight to get to the BMW Cowley factory.
