Three Witney firefighters aimed to burn up the miles and raise money for new tyres for the station’s cherished 1936 fire engine.
Sub-Officer Gordon Skeates, leading fireman George Houghton and fireman Mervyn Jewell were pictured in training for a sponsored 50-mile bike ride from Witney to Banbury and back in 1981.
None of them were regular cyclists, but were prepared to try anything for the sake of the old machine.

The Leyland Tiger Cub was on the road for 30 years before being replaced by new engines in 1967.
It needed six new tyres, each costing £100, and a new exhaust as restoration approached completion.
