PEOPLE who plan to use disposable BBQs are being reminded about how to use them safely.

It comes after grocery store the Co-op launched a campaign aimed at promoting safer use of instant BBQs in a bid to prevent fires.

Special messages will be printed reminding customers of the need to extinguish and dispose of the devices properly, with instructions showing that water should be used to safely put them out.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is not calling for an outright ban of disposable BBQs, but it is encouraging residents to follow this safety guidance:

• It must be placed on an even surface on either bricks or paving slabs. Never place it directly onto grass or wooden garden furniture.

• Place disposable barbecues well away from the house, shed or fences.

• Do not use disposable barbecues near or on public benches.

• If you're using a disposable barbecue, ensure it has cooled before putting it in the bin. To avoid starting a fire you should allow it to cool for several hours and then consider pouring water over it to make sure it's out.

The National Fire Chiefs Council expressed concerns over the number of disposable BBQ-related fires, both in outdoor spaces and in the home. For more fire safety tips, go to 365alive.co.uk
