WE reported that Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel urged drivers to leave their vehicles at home twice a month to celebrate Earth Day.

Drivers make about 600 car journeys annually. Switching one in every 25 journeys to a bus would reduce the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions by two million tonnes.

We asked our readers whether they ould leave their car at home to help cut carbon and here's what you said:

JAMES DOBSON: "Nope not when it’s cheaper for me to drive where I want to go plus I don't think I'd be allowed on the bus with DIY supplies."

MANDY HOSKING: "I think all cities should have trams, run only electric powered taxicabs and buses to help the planet."

ROSIE FURLONG: "With the Covid outbreak people were told not to use the bus if they didn't have to, mainly for workers. I for one am worried about it spiking again so I wont travel on buses. Plus they are irregular."

DAVID MAINOR: "I’ll do what I want, I’m not gonna lie I don’t care about reducing carbon in the slightest."

CARL UNDERWOOD: "Sitting in a cold hard bland box on seats less comfortable than a park bench, for £6+ taking an eternity to get anywhere. No thanks."

DIVYESH LAD: "Most people pay an absolute fortune to put a car on a road. From the purchase price, the road tax, insurance, MOT, maintenance and don't get me started on fuel, the duty and the VAT everything is also subject to.

"After forking out all that, do you think they're gonna leave it behind to use something that drives on a route which is nowhere near the destination you want to get to and not door to door?"

SAM BAKER: "Not when my car is zero emissions, it's cheaper for me to drive and I get exactly to where I want to go."

LAURENCE JOHNSON: "Here’s the clue. Go to an out of town supermarket and watch the people coming out with a trolley loaded to the top. Now imagine how they will carry that to a bus stop with three children, get on the bus, get off, and walk the distance home."

RICHARD PILL: "They should give change to cash presented in reasonable amounts. To ban giving change and reject cash disenfranchises some people. Cost can deter too."

AHURA ARIAN: "Get on the bus then you will never be on time for work and you will be fired. After that you will not need neither bus nor car. How can people rely on unreliable transport?"

SARDAR TAHA: "Make bus tickets cheaper then everyone will travel with buses."

VICTORIA MAY GIMIGLIANO-GARDOM: "I live on this route and have seen at least three buses a day for about a month and only ever seen one passenger. I'm all up for improving public transport infrastructure but seems like a waste of time and money to run the service if they are not engaging the community to use it or it's too expensive for a ticket.

"I think the sentiment from all is that when it's needed, absolutely run the service. But, also have some kind of engagement strategy with the community to ensure it's use is being maximised to reduce the number of vehicles on the road."

BEN MARSHALL: "I think this new Wantage - Didcot bus is great for Grove. Unfortunately many people are still working from home/want to avoid Covid so it’s a shame it’s been put in place when there’s reduced demand."

CHRISTIAN HODGKINSON: "As soon as the pandemic is over. Until then, I will not be using public transport if I can help it. Would rather ride my bike

EDWIN CHAFFIN: "Why would I struggle with my shopping when I can do one trip, put it in the boot and drive home? I would need at least four journeys on the bus to do the same."

TERRI PEARCE: "Sadly we have spent the last 50 years making life impossible without a car. Not everyone works in the city centre, bus routes have been slashed and there are a lot of out of town shopping centres. Life without a car is now very difficult."
