An anonymous Oxford University student, who witnessed the aftermath, said it looked like a 'serious' crime scene.

She commented: "I was there when police arrived and the victim was still on the sidewalk bleeding.

"There was quite a lot of blood and shards of glass from bottles strewn down the sidewalk, like perhaps the attackers had thrown a bottle or broken a bottle and used the broken bottle to stab the victim.

"The police interviewed some witnesses who said that the victim was being chased by two men who had an altercation with him and then ran off.

"There were some young people around the victim dressing the wounds and covering him with a foil blanket.

"The victim appeared either unconscious or in a very weak state."

Thames Valley Police urged anyone with information about the incident, who has not already contacted the force, to call 101, quoting reference number 43210171217.
