A MAN has been sentenced following an assault in Oxford.

Alan Cottingham, 52, of Seacourt Road, Botley was sentenced yesterday to one year and nine months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, following a hearing at Oxford Crown Court.

At a previous hearing on February 23, he was found guilty of one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Cottingham was also ordered to pay £750 compensation to the victim and an indefinite restraining order was granted.

This sentencing relates to a domestic-related incident that took place on October 31, 2019 in which Cottingham assaulted the victim by punching and kicking her repeatedly. He also caused scarring to her face using his fingernails and caused bruising to her body.

He was charged on March 10, 2020.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Sean Campbell, based at St Aldates police station, said: “I would like to commend the victim in this case on her bravery in coming forward.

“Thames Valley Police will never tolerate any form of domestic abuse. I would encourage other victims to come forward and be assured that they will be listened to and we will take action against offenders.
