NEW DATA has revealed how many people responded to the initial consultation about the newly implemented Low Traffic Neighbourhood [LTN] scheme.

LTN’s were introduced across Church Cowley, Temple Cowley and Florence Park in March by Oxfordshire County Council as part of a six-month trial.

The scheme hopes to calm traffic in the areas and reduce emissions from vehicles.

The council ran a consultation period in December 2020, with each household in Cowley receiving the letter.

In total, 969 households out of 5,808 households - or 17 per cent of households - in the area (according to 2011 census data) responded to the consultation.

The Florence Park area had the greatest number of households responding to the consultation, with 24 per cent of households replying.

Church Cowley had the smallest number of consultation responses, with only 13 per cent (or 322 out of 2576 households) responding to the council.

In the Temple Cowley area,17 per cent (or 307 out of 1792 households), responded.

The scheme has split residents opinion since it has been implemented.

While some residents have praised the quieter streets, and safer roads for cycling, others argue it has increased journey time and congestion in other areas of the city.

Some residents expressed concerns about how the consultation for the LTN in the area was implemented.

One resident said: “We felt completely in the dark and in the shadows until it arrived. “What is the official route to voice an opinion?”

The Council has a new online consultation where resident’s can submit their views on the LTNs in the Cowley area until September 17 2021.

After the six-month trial period is over, the council may decide to extend the experiment for another 12 months before deciding whether to make the scheme permanent, amend it or cancel it.
