Residents of congested Oxfordshire towns want new traffic restrictions to stop lorries shaking historic buildings and straining ancient bridges.

Councillors have called for the new restrictions to be brought in to the areas of Burford, Chipping Norton, and Henley in an effort to stop HGVs driving through them and causing damage to structures.

This is what Oxford Mail readers thought about the proposed new measures:

David Cameron-Young: “People will soon moan when shops have empty shelves and garages have no fuel.

“Yes, lorries can be a pain, but they are a necessity.”

Rod Mckenzie: “Without lorries we get nothing. No lorry driver goes out for fun - every journey is essential.

“Delivering to business for business, especially after lockdown, we should appreciate the vital part logistics supply chains made in keeping us fed, clothed and watered.

“Oh, and they deliver vaccine, too.”

Emma Goodway Walker: “No, trucks need to deliver. No trucks mean empty shelves. Build a bypass then trucks go miles out of their way every day for deliveries then everything they deliver goes up in price.”

Jason Gillett: “Running HGV around this area is already hard enough with weight limits on bridges and Burford high street.

“My lorry has to do miles extra to serve our needs locally. How is that helping the environment.”

Matt Bullock: “How are trucks meant to get anywhere? Burford, Woodstock and Chipping Norton are on major A roads.”

Sue Lewis: “Think for a moment. Everything we eat, wear, use, the homes we live in... in fact everything comes on the back of a lorry. Give them a break. Let them do their job or do without. Simple.”

Roberto Losito: “Woodstock is too narrow for huge lorries, there should be another way.”

Andrew Morgan: “Stop ordering groceries stop ordering materials stop having shops. We need lorries. They're a massive part of the country's logistics system.”

Rhys Williams: “All this will do is displace HGVs from roads built to take HGVs, such as main A roads, through towns like Burford and Chippy, onto the small country lanes.

"More lunacy from Oxfordshire County Council.”

Anne Mandry: “My village is already affected. There used to be hens pecking in the middle of the road. Now it is a matter of trying to get myself and my dog across it before we get run over.

“My little village gets all the A road traffic now that there is a weak bridge on the Chippy Stow route.

“Why they have to come off the Chippy Burford A road too I do not know, but the traffic is now appalling. My cottage shakes each time.”

Guy Crevald: “As a lorry driver, I would rather not go into historic towns. The roads are too small and it is generally hard to navigate.

"But if construction sites want their materials and shops want stock, how do you think it gets there?”

Steve Hill: “Very few lorries would pick a busy town centre as a 'rat run'.

“They are there because they have business there, like delivering stock to shops.

“If you want no lorries, get rid of all the shops. Make everyone shop in out-of-town retail parks.

“In the case of say Chipping Norton or Woodstock, the main A road goes through the middle of the town, and there is no bypass.

“The road was there first. So, we are where we are. Lorries cannot fly, and things get messy if they divert across open fields. Or through the Blenheim Estate.”

Julie Newman: “Might they be delivering goods to those towns?”

Steve Bowles: “No trucks equal no deliveries, equal no business, equal no jobs, equal no town.

"Make your choice, the haulage industry does not run trucks for a jolly day out.

“They deliver the essential needs of all to all.”
