POLICE stopped 25 drivers in a crackdown on drink-driving in Abingdon today.

Officers from Abingdon Roads Policing Department and road safety constable Mark Pilling were on the Oxford Road in Abingdon from 7.15am.

About 25 drivers were stopped and asked if they had had a drink the night before. If they answered yes, they were breathalysed.

All drivers were spoken to about the dangers of drink-driving and the need to watch what you are drinking if you intend to drive the following morning.

At 8am, a 48-year-old man from Abingdon provided a positive breath sample and was arrested. He has been released on police bail until February 4, 2008.

PC Pilling said: "The aim of this check was to speak to drivers about the dangers of driving after a heavy night's drinking.

"Most people we speak to wouldn't dream of drinking and driving, but they don't stop to consider that when they do drink, they could still be over the limit the next day.

"Thames Valley Police are committed to reducing the number of people who are killed or seriously injured on our roads and educating drivers on the dangers of drink-driving is an important part of this.

"People who drink and drive put themselves, their loved ones and other road-users at risk. If you know someone is drinking and driving, report them to police or call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111."
