Robert Courts, the Conservative MP for Witney wrote a long and heartfelt tribute to the Duke.

He said: "A terribly sad day for us all. A great man who lived a life of service for our country in times of peace and in war.

"I know that the thoughts and prayers of West Oxfordshire are with Her Majesty The Queen, to whom Prince Philip devoted his life, and the entire Royal Family. May He Rest in Peace."

David Johnston, the Conservative MP for Wantage and Grove, said: "Few people will serve their country as long and as steadfastly as he did ours.
