A DEMONSTRATION is taking place in Oxford tomorrow in solidarity with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities.

Campaigners from the local branch of Stand Up To Racism will gather at Bonn Square at 5pm to mark International Roma Day and to highlight ‘increased attacks’ that these communities are facing.

The event at the heart of the city comes amid the proposed Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which, if passed, would make 'intentional trespass' a criminal offence.

Under the proposal, families living on unauthorised encampments could face a three-month prison sentence, a fine of up to £2,500 or the removal of their home.

The Bill would also make it harder to stage protests.

Oxford Stand Up To Racism urged attendees at tomorrow's event to adhere to all Covid-19-safety measures, including practicing social distancing and wearing face coverings at all times.

The controversial Bill, dubbed the 'anti-protest Bill', has been opposed by a number of organisations in Oxfordshire.

On Saturday, hundreds turned out in Oxford city centre to oppose the Bill. It was one of 25 'Kill the Bill' rallies that took place across the UK that day.
