A SCHOOL for students with autism has donated hundreds of Easter eggs to support a local hospice.

LVS Oxford, based in Begbroke, donated more than 250 eggs to Helen & Douglas House.

The hospice had originally approached the Shipton Hub food bank to provide 100 eggs for terminally ill children in its care.

Students at LVS responded by smashing that target, meaning donations extended to include Be Free Young Carers, which supports young carers aged between eight and 18, in Oxfordshire.

LVS Oxford Year 7 tutor Amanda Porter said: “As a specialist school, LVS Oxford has smaller class sizes and a total of just 70 students, so we were overwhelmed by the response and generosity from pupils, parents and staff as hundreds of eggs and chocolate treats were brought in.

“Getting involved in the appeal helps the children to learn about the work of Shipton Hub and enjoy the experience of helping and giving.”

Shipton Hub founder Brenda Gratwicke added: “The response from the whole community to this appeal, and to the food bank in general, has been fantastic, but the response from LVS Oxford really was amazing.

“The students donated more eggs than I thought to ever see in one go from donations, and more importantly, it’s enough to bring smiles to hundreds of children.

“We are absolutely amazed by their kindness and generosity and cannot thank them enough.”

Shipton Hub was created during the first lockdown period, and now works almost exclusively to tackle food poverty in the local area.

In 2021, the initiative has introduced a ‘calendar of kindness’, with a focus on a different charity each month.

LVS is an autism specific school, offering day placements to young people with autism, aged 11 to 19.
