A SUCCESSFUL school in Banbury will expand to meet demand if residents agree.

Hanwell Fields Community Primary School and nursery had just 30 pupils when it opened in 2003. The nursery is now full, 14 children are on the waiting list and 42 parents have chosen the school as first choice for their children next year.

Parents, staff and governors are now taking part in consultation, which ends on January 11. If there are no objections, a final decision will be made by Oxfordshire County Council on March 4.

More nursery space is planned, as well as two meeting rooms, a larger assembly hall and a bigger library and playground. The alterations would increase capacity to 90 children.

Michael Waine, the county's cabinet member for school improvement, said: "We want to make sure families moving to Hanwell Fields will have places at the local school and nursery for their children."

In December last year, the school was said to be one of the best in the country after its first Ofsted report described it as outstanding in all areas.

The report put it in the top ten per cent in the UK.
