A MAN has charged with the attempted rape of a woman in Oxford

Abdul Banaras, 34, of Alice Smith Square in Oxford, was charged last night with one count of attempted rape and one count of assault by penetration.

It comes after a woman in her 50s made a complaint of sexual assault on Monday afternoon between 3pm and 4.30pm, inside a property in Alice Smith Square. 

She did not require hospital treatment and is being supported by specialist officers.

Banaras was remanded in custody to appear at Oxford Magistrates’ Court today.

Yesterday police appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Jamie Macaro, based at St Aldate's Police Station, said: “This was a distressing incident for the victim and she is being supported by specialist officers at this time.

“I am appealing for anyone who has any information about this incident to please come forward.

“In particular, from our investigation so far, I am appealing for a female member of the public who may have seen a distressed woman in the area between 3pm and 4.30pm to please get in touch as we believe you may have important information.
