More than 200 crimes of a violent or sexual nature were reported in Oxford in just one month this year.

The data for January 2021 - the most recent available from Thames Valley Police - shows that there were 204 reports of violent and/or sexual crimes in the city.

Headington had the highest number of these cases, with 70 recorded.

And in Oxford City Centre, 51 violent or sexual offence crimes were reported in January. In Cowley, there were 55 reports, and in North Oxford there were 28 reports.

Over the past three years more than 7,500 crimes of a violent or sexual nature were reported to the police in the Oxford area.

According to police data, the category of violence and sexual offences has been reported more times in Oxford than any other category, such as theft, anti-social behaviour and drugs.

It comes as women across social media have shared their experiences of feeling fearful when walking alone at night, following the disappearance of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old woman who had walked home alone after seeing a friend in London.

A vigil planned by Reclaim These Street took place on Clapham Common on Saturday evening after a Metropolitan Police officer was arrested on suspicion of Sarah Everard’s kidnap and murder.
