WITH lockdown restrictions putting a dampener on this weekend’s Mothering Sunday celebrations, families are finding socially distanced ways to thank their mums.
Among the local independent businesses working overtime to supply gifts is Oxford’s Happy Cakes bakery.
The Summertown bakery, run by pâtissier Julia Atkinson, is today still taking orders for Sunday.
Mrs Atkinson has had a busy year, baking gifts for families, keyworkers and NHS staff, with numerous drop offs to the city’s hospitals.

She said: “It has been a hard year for all of us. Because of lockdowns and tier restrictions, lots of people have been unable to see their mums at all, so it’s particularly tough that there won’t be any proper celebrations for most mothers this Sunday.
“We are at least trying to spread a little bit of cheer through cake.
“We have had lots of orders from families keen to order treats that can be delivered to their mothers in Oxford.
“It’s a lovely way of thanking mums for all they’ve done – until they get to see them for real in a few weeks time... hopefully.”
