A FUNDRAISER set up for a woman who lost her father in a house fire in Oxford has been cancelled because of online trolls.

Fiona Patten lost her father, Martin Patten, in a house fire on Watlington Road, Cowley, last month.

The online fundraiser, set up by Ms Patten’s friend Lynne Berry, was aiming to raise money to restore the home that was destroyed in the fire.

Yesterday morning, however, Ms Berry said that the fundraiser, that had been set up on Go Fund Me to raise £35,000, had been cancelled because online trolls were targeting Mr Patten’s grieving daughter.

Nearly £700 had been raised.

'Ugly people'

On the fundraising site, Ms Berry said: “Unfortunately the world contains some very ugly people and Fiona has asked that I delete this campaign due to trolling.

“It seems to be a given in this day and age. I grew up being told if you can’t say anything nice, don’t speak.

“Anyway, it is with sadness and disappointment that I will do as Fiona asked.

“I have requested refunds for all donors. This campaign will still be active until I receive confirmation of refunds.

“Could I ask if anyone has shared the link to this campaign on the social media, delete it please.”

It is understood that Mr Patten's home insurance on the house had lapsed, therefore Ms Berry thought the fundraiser could help raise money to restore the home which had 'barely a shell left'.
