NITRIC acid leaked from a garage in South Oxfordshire this morning.

Firefighters rushed to the scene in Stanford in the Vale, near Faringdon, at 11am after Thames Valley Police called to report a 'bubbling brown substance'.

Crews from Faringdon, Wantage and Didcot fire stations quickly arrived and placed a safety cordon around the incident to ensure the public were kept at a safe distance.

Oxford Mail:

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the garage and contained a leak of nitric acid.

Due to their swift work, the spill was limited to less then half a litre and specialist equipment was used to contain the spillage.

Incident commander Matt Kelly said: "This incident was purely accidental but the outcome could have been far worse.

Oxford Mail:

"Thanks to the quick thinking of members of the public and decisive action by our crews, the incident was contained and no harm came to anyone or the environment."
