NEWS that an American fast-food restaurant is set to open a new branch in the city has divided Oxford Mail readers.

Wendy’s will open one of its first UK stores in Magdalen Street, the unit next to Debenhams which used to house shoe shop Schuh, before it moved to the Westgate.

The burger restaurant is forging ahead with its plans and has recently submitted its designs for the new shop front to Oxford City Council.

Oxford will be the second Wendy’s to open in the UK under current plans.

However, the news led to a mixed reaction from readers.

Keshana Jones: I’ll go just for the chocolate Frosty

Darren Krystie: Let’s hope they expand to other parts of the UK. I absolutely love Wendy’s burgers and the Wendy’s Frosty

Loren Jose: Looking forward. I want my ice tea and Frosty

Gareth Swann: Awesome. Had a Wendy’s last time I was in America. Way better than McDonald’s and Burger King

Michael Russell: Awesome. Also, try checking out their Twitter. It’s savage

Kevin Keogh: They used to be in London. Great burgers

Leanne Marie: Didn’t rate it in America, walked straight out of one... doubt here will be any different. I think I’d rather invest in the local businesses struggling currently

Claire Friedli: We’ve just got a Brets Burger in Witney. That’s a proper burger. You can keep your American fast food.

Johnson Patrick: And the good thing is it’s cheap, unlike Five Guys. Of course McDonald’s ain’t going to like Wendy’s coming to town

Alan Bentall: Screw American fast food...we need English fast food. More fish and chip shops, and maybe, dare I ask... a proper pie and mash shop

Kacie Brain: Why can’t we have an activity-based place, For example, more museums, another ice skating rink made, a couple of leisure centres. Why does it have to be another food place?

David Cameron-Young: There’s nothing wrong with giving people choice. If it’s no good, it won’t be there long. Five Guys is there too, but I don’t remember the whinging when they opened

ES Skepi: We don’t need anymore unhealthy food in Oxford, we need everyone to be fit. If people are fitter and healthier, they won’t get sick so often, and possibly have stronger immune systems to fight Covid-19

Sorina Chiosa: We need more healthy food... not junk food

Edward Chapman: If people want to eat healthy they will, and if people want to eat junk food they will. Unfortunately we live in a world where people don’t want to be healthy and want to eat junk food. It’s never going to change so people need to accept the fact that everyone is different and we can’t make people all healthy, or vegan or even vegetarian

Cox Haz: I’d rather have the big franchises in Oxford rather than all these other takeaways that transfer ownership and change name if they get a couple of bad reviews. In franchises, you generally get better customer service

James Ashwin: I don’t disagree that there is already plenty of fast food in that area, but I disagree that it should be the council’s role to try and control a free market. I can’t see Wendy’s lasting long. They don’t have the brand strength of McDonald’s or KFC in the UK and their food isn’t as good as Five Guys

Youn Gary: Nothing says quality food like American fast food

Dawn Hanson: Just what Oxford needs, yet another fast food place

James Sawyer: Ronald McDonald will not be happy

Simon Gutteridge: America can keep Wendy’s

David Saxon: It won’t last long
