School term time could be extended into the summer holidays.

The Government is considering extending the summer term to allow pupils time to catch up with their education.

The missed holiday time would then be added to the autumn and winter holidays instead.

We asked our readers if they thought opening schools in the summer holidays was a good idea. This is what our readers had to say:

Robert Green: “Teachers need a break too. They have been providing lessons both at school and online often working excess hours to ensure all pupils are given support.”

James Dobson: “No I do not think it is fair on the children. They be allowed to be children. They find it hard to study at home as it is and as a parent sitting down for most of the day helping them it is almost like being back at work while still looking after the other two as well. Everyone needs a break.”

Matt Spittle: “Schools are open, children are still working just in a different location. It is down to parents and planning to make sure that children are doing their work. If restrictions are lifted mine will be going on holiday.”

Sonia Sear: “Yes, but not the whole summer perhaps reduce the six week holiday to four. Learning virtually is not the same as face to face and some Oxfordshire schools are not delivering live lessons. This will be the second academic year where education has taken a big hit.”

Liz May: “Absolutely not. It is not right for the teachers. They are working so hard to support and teach children through this pandemic. They need a break, give them a break or they will break.”

Lorraine Smith: “No. I am a grandmother of an eight-year-old I am my daughter’s child care bubble. We both work part-time and have juggled work, home schooling and looking after a two-year-old. My grandson has worked really hard and has had to put up with us trying to teach him. My granddaughter has had less interaction time because of home schooling. My grandson’s teacher is on teams twice a day as well as teaching in the classroom and setting and marking all online work. We all need a break to have some normal family time. Teachers have families too. I look forward to us having some free time with both the children this summer.”

Sally Snapper: “Maybe cut them by a couple of weeks. Start back to school in August. I was always bored by the end of summer holidays.”

Kelly Pickett: “So the idea is to work all the teachers to the bone so they end up leaving and all the NHS staff can work hard with no pay rise. Awful. Hands up who can guess the job shortages in a few years time.”

Kim Newport: “This is a terrible idea kids have been unable to socialise now for nearly a year have been stuck inside doing school work in front of screens. They as well as the teachers need a break. Its not like they have been on holiday or just messing about for months.

“They need to be kids have fun and live a bit of a normal life doing stuff with family and friends they should have been doing for the past year. They are as fed up as we all are. I need a break from home schooling.”

Benjamin-Hugh Mackay: “The long summer holidays are necessary. People’s mental health is at stake.”

Gaynor Sophie: “Yes I’d be more than happy so would my 15-year-old. He is so worried about his education he has been going into his school two days a week just so he can get some human interaction with other kids and teachers, instead of being stuck looking at a screen all day.”

Terri Pearce: “What about the teachers who have had one of the most taxing, exhausting years in their careers and who have worked tirelessly for a year?”

Sarah Wyatt: “From a parental perspective I think this is a good idea.”

Tracey Matthews: “No. I have already booked a family staycation plus the kids have been working hard.”
