A GREEK restaurant which prides itself on serving traditional and high-quality food has landed itself with a five-star food hygiene rating.

Brousko on Cowley Road in Oxford opened in July 2020 in the middle of the pandemic and, despite the struggles lockdown has put on independent businesses, the restaurant already has rave reviews online.

The self-proclaimed ‘best Greek restaurant’ in Oxford scored a five-star hygiene rating on its inspection by Oxford City Council on January 12.

The restaurant was found to be handling food in a hygienic way, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.

The building was found to be clean and with an appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control.

The inspectors were also confident that the restaurant had proper checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the inspector was confident that standards would be maintained.

Brousko’s staff and managers were not available for a comment on their five-star rating but on their website, it states: “We are dedicated to the highest-quality food and we will not compromise on safety and health issues. We follow all health department guidelines at our restaurant.”

It adds: “When you return, we want you to respect social concerns for the safety of all. Our team has been working for the past few months to put together processes and procedures to ensure that our food is delivered to you in a safe way.”

All the reviews on the TripAdvisor website for Brousko are five stars, even though it has mostly been open for takeaway only due to the pandemic.

One happy customer left a review in November and said: “It is a fantastic restaurant with great food, clean and cosy atmosphere. The staff are very helpful. I would highly recommend it.”

Other customers left reviews saying it was the best Greek restaurant in Oxford and not one person has had anything bad to say so far.

Another customer wrote a review in October and said: “One of the best restaurants. The service is great, the staff are really friendly, the food is so good and everything about the place is spectacular.”

Brousko food is still available during lockdown as the restaurant offers takeaway, available on Just Eat and Deliveroo.
