ELECTRIC car owners across Oxford are now able to hook their vehicles up to lampposts to charge them.

Upgrades have been made to 29 lamppost chargers in 11 streets across the city, and now anyone who drives an electric car can plug in and charge through a pay as you go service.

There are also 13 bollards across the city with similar charging points which are available for use by members of the public too.

The chargers have been trialled with car clubs in some areas, as well as with residents who might have an electric car but do not have a garage or driveway where they can park it and charge themselves.

Go Ultra Low Oxford, which is described by the University of Oxford as having 'global scientific significance', has trialled five different charging technologies for 24 residents across Oxford.

The first phase of the project, which took place from July 2017 to June 2019, saw 46 charge-points installed across 28 locations, and the use of 10 electric Co-Wheels car club vehicles.

The project has been made possible after the City Council secured an £800,000 grant from the Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicle in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council.

The next phase of the project will see further chargers installed across the city .

Residents who would like their street to be considered for an electric charging point in phase two of the project can express their interest via the demand tracker- goultralowoxford.org
