A FIRE engine was involved in a collision with two cars in Abingdon today, prompting police to close one of the town's major routes.

Police closed Marcham Road following the crash at 9.30am, at the roundabout joining the entrance road to Tesco.

The fire engine was responding to an emergency call when it was involved in the collision with a black SEAT Leon and a blue Volkswagen Polo.

A man was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford with serious injuries while a man and a woman were treated for minor injuries.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said accident investigators were at the scene and the road could be closed for several hours. The Colewell Drive junction is also shut.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance said two patients were taken to hospital.

No one from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was available for comment.
