WE all know that Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford - this pub quiz question we can confidently nail.

But what about the celebrities whose local credentials are less popular?

Here are five people (sort of) who, it may surprise you to learn, were born in our region.

 

Florence Pugh

Little Women star Florence Pugh can no longer be called a 'rising star' after she nearly scoooped an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress category in 2020 for her role as Amy March. 

While the 25-year-old actress currently lives in Los Angeles, she was born in Oxford and is the daughter of restaurateur Clinton Pugh and dance teacher Deborah Pugh.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw

Gugu Mbatha-Raw's breakthrough came with the British period drama Belle in 2013, for which she won the BIFA Award for Best Actress.

Since then, the Oxford-born actress has progressed her career on screen in the films Miss Sloane, Beauty and the Beast, and Misbehaviour. 

She grew up in Witney.

Louis Hynes

Louis Hynes is best known for his role for his leading role as Klaus Baudelaire in the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Born and raised in Oxford, the star has a stellar list of memorable performances behind him at just 19 including roles in the Channel 4 comedy-drama The Great.

Radiohead

English rock band Radiohead was formed in Abingdon where Thom Yorke, brothers Jonny and Colin Greenwood, Ed O'Brien and Philip Selway met while all studied at Abingdon School between 1985 and 1992.

They credited their music teacher for introducing them to jazz and film scores.

Annabelle Wallis

The actress is well-known for her roles as Jane Seymour in the period drama The Tudors and Grace Burgess in the BBC hit drama Peaky Blinders.

Ms Wallis was born in Oxford but was raised in Cascais, Portugal, where her family emigrated when she was eighteen months old.
