Motorists who passed a stranded driver moments before she was hit by another car may have the answers to how she was killed.

When Victoria McBryde's car broke down she pulled over on the westbound carriageway on the A40 near Wheatley.

Just 20 minutes later, at about 11pm, a green Peugeot 106 collided with her car and Miss McBryde, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last night Sgt Bill Sykes urged drivers to recall if they were driving along the dual carriageway between 10.30pm and 11pm on Tuesday, November 20.

He said: "I am positive if someone had seen this car stranded in the inside lane they would be able to remember it.

"The family need to know how this collision occurred and why it occurred. We also need to build the picture of what the driver who struck this car was able to see."

Police believe Miss McBryde, of Northants, suffered a front tyre blowout at about 10.35pm.

Mobile telephone records showed she made calls to her family around five minutes later.

Her gold Fiat Punto was stranded in the left hand lane of the dual carriageway about 300 yards west of the A40 junction with the A418, which leads to the M40.

It remained on an unlit bend for about 20 minutes before the accident.

Sgt Sykes added: "Even at that time of night, many cars would have passed."

A 20-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been bailed until January 30.
