People still in Oxford city centre despite lockdown rules

Under the current rules, non-essential shops, gyms, leisure centres, beauty salons and schools are closed.

Although city centre shops are closed, some remain open offering click and collect services.

People should work from home and only leave when necessary, but unlike the first lockdown, residents say more people are out and about despite the stay at home order.

People are also concerned that restrictions are not as tough as the first lockdown.

Supermarkets are tightening their rules again with Waitrose, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda all confirming that they will stop customers from shopping who refuse to wear a mask in stores, unless medically exempt.

It comes after shoppers expressed their concerns that supermarkets were not being tough enough on social distancing measures.

Crime and policing minister Kit Malthouse said the Government was closely monitoring the number of cases before deciding whether further measures were needed.

“We are at a very, very perilous stage in the progress of this virus through our country,” he told Sky News.

“Whether there are going to be greater restrictions or not very much depends on the numbers. We are tracking the infection rate.

“We are all, frankly, on tenterhooks to see how the impact of the restrictions that came in on Boxing Day will impact on numbers, particularly in London and the South East.”

A new 'high-profile' enforcement approach could include stopping people to ask what they were doing outside their homes.
