It was a day for celebration as Oxford United beat the mighty Manchester United.
The home team triumphed 5-4 over their Northern rivals in a nail-biting game finally decided on penalties.
However, the game in July 1985 wasn’t played at the Manor Ground at Headington or at Old Trafford in Manchester, and the players weren’t fully-grown men battling it out on the pitch.

It was a mini-tournament for five and six-year-olds at Sandhills Primary School at Headington.
Even at that age, they had their favourite football teams – Oxford United were building up to their memorable 3-0 victory over Queen’s Park Rangers in the Milk Cup final at Wembley the following year, and the achievements of Manchester United were well known.

Headteacher Margaret Armitage said: “We started a knockout competition about five weeks ago and this was the final. The children sorted themselves into teams and adopted football club names. They had been showing an interest in football and so at the start of the term, we arranged for the 10-year-olds to teach them some of the skills.”
The whole school turned out for the final and pupils made a special cup and badges to hand to the winning ‘Oxford United’ team.
Classroom assistants Sandra Head and Sally Doughty lent colour to the occasion by dressing as Prince Frog and his Queen and presenting the prizes.

This wasn’t the school’s only link with Oxford United – the school team was given a tour of the Manor Ground in 1991.
