A RECKLESS driver has been spared jail after he rammed a woman off the road.

Alan Martin Thompson, who lives in Wantage, was on his way home from a racing track in Anglesey when he started ‘driving aggressively’, breaking the speed limit.

The 32-year-old was behind the wheel of a Mercedes Sprinter that was towing a BMW racing car on a ‘large trailer’.

Mold Crown Court, in Wales, heard how Thompson had started giving 'rude gestures' to the Cora driver in front on him on the A494 in Aston Hill on the night of July 21, 2019.

He had become annoyed but as he went to overtake her failed to account for the ‘large trailer’ he was pulling along – ramming the driver off the road.

Police said it was only by ‘sheer luck’ that he didn’t kill anybody.

Investigating officer, PC Emma Birrell said: “Thomspon had been driving in excess of the speed limit, when due to his own aggressive driving, he became aggrieved by the female driver of the Corsa. He shouted expletives and made rude gestures towards her.

“He then cut in front of the Corsa to frighten her, however, he failed to account for the large trailer that he was towing at the time which collided with the Corsa ramming her off the road.

“Thompson had no consideration for others as he drove dangerously that evening while unfortunately resulted in a woman being seriously injuries, of which she is still undergoing treatment to this day.

“It is only by sheer luck that this wasn’t a fatal road traffic Collison.”

Thompson was found guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and on Monday appeared in the dock of the same court to be sentenced.

He was sent to prison for six months, suspended for 18 months and was fined £5,000.

He must also pay £2,800 in court costs, a £149 victim surcharge and will be disqualified from driving for two years.

He must take an extended retest before his licence is returned to him.

PC Birrell added: “It is shameful that a small number of motorists still feel they can behave in a totally reckless manner when they take to the roads. People who drive in this manner are taking their lives and the lives of others into their own hands.

“Consider the consequences – dangerous driving can wreck lives and you could face losing your licence, your job, face imprisonment and, much worse, have to live with the guilt of destroying someone’s life. Don’t take the risk.”

North Wales Police thanked witnesses for coming forward to help with the investigation.
