NEARLY 600 new Covid cases were recorded in Oxfordshire in a day as the UK's death toll went up by more than a thousand.

According to Public Health England, as of 9am Wednesday, these were the number of new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours:
- Oxford - 98
- Oxfordshire - 588
- UK - 62,322
The total coronavirus cases since the pandemic started:
- Oxford - 5,836
- Oxfordshire - 20,832
- UK - 2,836,801
Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.
A further 1,041 people were reported to have died within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test.
This takes the UK death toll to 77,346.
No new deaths were announced today at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH).

On Tuesday, seven Covid deaths were reported in NHS England's daily update, taking the overall death toll at the trust to 264.
Since the start of the pandemic the trust has treated 1,972 people who tested positive for coronavirus.
The latest available hospital trust-level figures show, as of Wednesday, December 30, OUH was treating 185 Covid-positive patients, with 21 in serious enough condition to need to be on ventilation.
Across the UK, hospitals were treating 30,451 Covid patients as of Monday, with 2,645 people on ventilation.
Globally, there have now been more than 1.8 million coronavirus deaths.
