THE new Lord Mayor of Oxford will share videos of himself at the gym as part of an 'exciting' campaign to encourage people in the city to 'get active throughout 2021'.

Mark Lygo said he would be 'sharing ideas and opportunities' with people, 'so everyone can move and be more active every day whether at home, accessing the many green spaces of Oxford or participating in other activities'.

He added: "Everyone can get involved, whilst still adhering to safety measures during the coronavirus pandemic."

The Labour member on Oxford City Council said he would emphasise how ‘moving more is key to helping our NHS through this pandemic and beyond by improving our overall health and will also help in relieving pressure on healthcare services too'.

The city council, which announced his plan, pointed out how physical activity helps lower blood pressure, improves heart and lung health, strengthens muscles and bones, improves balance, supports weight management, and increases flexibility and mobility.

The council also said: "It also boosts mental health by reducing stress and anxiety and improving sleep."

Mr Lygo's campaign will highlight the wide range of parks and green spaces, sports and social clubs, and sports facilities that Oxford has to offer to help people be healthy.

Local groups and clubs are also being invited to ‘Challenge Mayor Mark’ to take part in their activities as part of the campaign this year, subject to the coronavirus restrictions.

Mr Lygo also said he would be sharing videos of himself taking on a range of activities while wearing the Lord Mayor’s Chain of Office, including running along the river and canal, playing table tennis on Manzil Way, volunteering at city parks and outdoor spaces (depending on the coronavirus safety restrictions), dancing, working out at the gym and ice skating.
