THERE were seven deaths of Covid patients announced today at the John Radcliffe’s hospital trust as cases across the county went up by more than 750.

The deaths took place at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH), which also runs the Churchill, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Banbury’s Horton General Hospital.

An NHS England update showed six of the patients died on Sunday and the other on Monday.

It follows two deaths announced on Monday, one of which also happened on Sunday.

It takes the total official coronavirus death toll at the trust since the start of the pandemic to 264.

As of Wednesday, December 30, OUH was treating 185 Covid-positive patients, with 21 in serious enough condition to need to be on ventilation.

Since the start of the pandemic the trust has treated 1,972 people who tested positive for coronavirus.

According to Public Health England, as of 9am Tuesday, these were the number of new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours:

  • Oxford - 181
  • Oxfordshire - 762
  • UK - 60,916

The total coronavirus cases since the pandemic started:

  • Oxford - 5,738
  • Oxfordshire - 20,244
  • UK - 2,774,479

Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.

A further 830 people were reported to have died within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test.

This takes the UK death toll to 76,305.
