Inadequate hand washing facilities and week-old milk were just two of the problems found by hygiene inspectors at a 'bubble tea' shop in Oxford.

The Taiwanese Bubble Tea shop is inside the GG Oriental Snacks shop in Gloucester Green.

Hygiene inspectors visited the shop and cafe on February 18, 2020, and gave it a one-star food hygiene rating.

On the day of inspection ‘inadequate’ hand washing facilities were found. The wash basin area was reportedly full of equipment and as a result could not be used. In the hygiene report it states that this must be changed and that a hand basin with soap must be available for use.

The Bubble Tea shop was also found to have 'poor stock rotation': on the visit inspectors found a cheese topping still in use on February 10, which was more than a week prior to the visit.

It was revealed during the inspection that the staff has been using their 'milk cup' and 'cheese cup' toppings for up to a week after it had been made. The inspector informed the shop that it should only keep these foods for two to three days.

The freezer was also kept at the wrong temperature and was storing food at -9 degrees Celsius when it should be kept at -18.

Risk of cross-contamination was found as the shop was only using detergent to clean the surfaces. The inspectors informed them that this only cleans grease and sanitiser should be provided for cleaning.

Juice drinks and other goods were found stored in the staff toilet leaving only a small space to access the facilities. The shop owners were told to remove these items.

Allergen signage was not provided for customers and allergen information for food and drinks prepared on the premises was not available.

Not one member of staff had allergen training and the inspector informed the shop that at least one member of staff should have training through the food standards agency.

A revisit was scheduled in April 2020 to assess if the required works had been completed, however, a manager at GG Oriental Snacks was unable to give an update or comment on the Taiwanese Bubble Tea shop.

A manager at the shop explained the Bubble Tea shop area of GG Oriental Snacks is currently closed due to Covid restrictions and the owners do not know when it will be able to reopen.
