A Freedom of Information (FOI) request to find out how many accidents have taken place this year at a roundabout has been refused.

The Oxford Mail submitted the enquiry to Thames Valley Police about the Vendee Drive A41 roundabout in Bicester.

The junction has seen three fatalities in 13 months, with the latest one in July involving a man in his sixties who crashed into the roundabout and died at the scene.

We asked the police for a list of all road traffic accidents that have taken place at the roundabout as well as on its A41 approach from junction 9 of the M40.

But the request was refused because it would take too long to gather the data.

The response said: "Unfortunately, this information is not held in an easily retrievable format. We are unable to search for data on a roundabout between multiple roads, only the individual roads themselves.

"Likewise we are unable to search for data on a ‘stretch of road’ only the whole length of the road.

"To retrieve the data relevant to your request, would involve conducting a manual search of collisions listed as both injury and non-injury between multiple systems across the areas relevant to your request.

"It is estimated that this would exceed the appropriate 18 hour time and £450 cost limit."

County councillor Ian Corkin whose Ploughley division includes Vendee Drive roundabout has called for traffic lights to be installed at the roundabout.
